Report: Pitt Reaching Out to 2025 5-Star SEC Quarterback Commit

Pitt Football 2025 QB target Matt Zollers.

It appears that Pitt isn’t out on one of the top quarterbacks in the class of 2025 just yet.

Matt Zollers — a 6-foot-4, 215-pound five-star quarterback from Spring-Ford High in Royersford, Pa. — committed to Missouri in April over Pitt, Penn State and Georgia, but the Panthers have been in contact of late, to some degree, according to Chad Simmons of On3.

Zollers has continued to receive interest from schools around the country despite his commitment to the Tigers and will visit Penn State this weekend for the Nittany Lions’ clash against Ohio State.

Pitt has a commitment from three-star quarterback Mason Heintschel in the class of 2025, who is in the midst of an outstanding senior season, but the Panthers’ staff is always on the hunt for top talent.

Zollers cut down a list of offers that included Boston College, ECU, Florida, Indiana, Kentucky, Liberty, Michigan State, Nebraska, Old Dominion, Syracuse, Temple, USF, Virginia, Virginia Tech and UConn during the offseason, and while it remains to be seen whether he will decommit from Missouri or show mutual interest with the Panthers, his recruitment bears watching.

Zollers picked up his first offer from Pitt last September, and he’s been out a handful of times to check out Pittsburgh. It doesn’t hurt that his older brother Zach is currently a walk-on defensive end either.

Former offensive coordinator Frank Cignetti Jr. initiated the process with Zollers, and when new offensive coordinator Kade Bell arrived, it was a seamless transition.

“(Bell has) been really good, he’s very straight up,” Zollers told Pittsburgh Sports Now earlier this year. “The type of offense he runs sounds very intriguing to play in. He seems like a very nice person. I’m going to try to go up for a visit soon, so I finally get to meet him, but I FaceTimed him a couple of times, talked to him on the phone a couple of times and  have been texting him a lot.”

Zollers made it out last for game-day visits against Cincinnati and Louisville, and his first-ever visit was all the way back in 2021.

“(The visits) were good,” Zollers said. “It was really cool to see everything. After the second one, they won. So, I got to go into the locker room to see what happens after a win. So, that was cool to see. They were nice.”

Zollers suffered a season-ending ankle injury as a senior, but he was almost unstoppable as a junior at Spring-Ford, completing 182-of-290 pass attempts (62.8%) for 2,917 yards with 37 touchdowns to two interceptions — adding 420 rushing yards and seven more touchdowns.

247Sports rates Zollers as the 53rd-ranked recruit in the class (sixth-ranked quarterback and top-ranked recruit from Pennsylvania) while Rivals rates him as the 105th-ranked recruit in the class (ninth-ranked quarterback and third-ranked recruit from Pennsylvania — holding a 5.8 Rivals Rating.

On3 rates him as the 31st-ranked recruit in the class (fifth-ranked quarterback and top-ranked recruit from Pennsylvania).

The QB looks good but who is that receiver #3? That guy is always open and on the receiving end of most of those plays. Let’s talk to that receiver as well and bring them both to Pitt.

I’ll be deep in the cold, cold ground before I recognize a commit to Missoura!

Thumbs down. The Hudl footage on the Commited kid from Ohio is legit. This Jr footage from Missouri commit from PA looks like glorified jump ball passing. Stay the path with kid from Ohio and trust the Evaluation.

Did you actually watch the Zollers footage? Kid looks totally legit to me. Those passes are right on the money. But then, why would we want the top recruit in the state? Go crawl under a rock, jabroni.

Jump ball, Air McNair. The kid from Ohio is not just throwing as far as he can on his footage. The competition is stiffer and he zips it short and intermediate. We got the right guy.

Get in here with your brother, Mr. Zollers! What an experience it will be to win alongside your own flesh and blood. Do it! Do it!

His throwing motion doesn’t look good to me, looks like he jumps when he releases the ball, but I’m not a QB coach. He does look very quick and athletic, but he’s not playing D1 players. Bell knows what he needs and we should trust him.
H2P!!!
