Pitt has announced a replacement for Jeff Capel for Tuesday’s game against No. 23 ranked Louisville.

Associate head coach Tim O’Toole will coach the team while Capel is sidelined after testing positive for COVID-19. Prior to joining Capel’s staff in 2018, O’Toole served as head coach at Fairfield from 1998 till 2006 along with numerous other assistant coaching stops including associate head coach at Stanford from 2016-18.

Capel released his first public comments about testing positive for COVID-19 in this statement from the basketball department.

“I am grateful that we have been able to avoid any additional positive test results and that our social distancing measures within the program have cleared our players and staff through contact tracing,” said Capel. “Everyone in our program and across the college basketball landscape is making significant sacrifices to have a successful season. I am proud of how our program and University has handled the pandemic and look forward to getting back on the court with my team.”

Following the game against Louisville, Pitt’s next scheduled game is Tuesday, Dec. 29 at Duke, before returning home on Jan. 2 against Notre Dame.
