Pitt’s second commitment for the Class of 2022 already has a connection to the current team.

Defensive tackle/fullback Elijah Statham, the younger brother of Panther redshirt freshman offensive tackle Michael Statham has verbally committed to Pitt. Statham currently attends St. Frances Academy in Baltimore, Maryland. Along with Pitt, Statham also held offers from Cincinnati and Akron.

Pitt’s interest in Statham goes back to his freshman season, when he participated in a prospects camp at Pitt in January of 2019, and received an offer after impressing the Pitt coaches. It was interesting that future Pitt signees Nahki Johnson and Dorien Ford also worked out that day with Statham.

At the time, it was a big deal for the younger Statham because it was his first scholarship offer. Pittsburgh Sports Now had a chance to catch up with him, and he was very excited about the news.

“It doesn’t feel real, it feels like a dream,” said Statham. “I was dreaming about this moment since I was younger and the fact that it really came true is just unbelievable.”

“Coach Narduzzi was very excited when he offered me. He came up to me and said ‘you have a scholarship to Pitt.” Then he told my family and that’s when all the excitement and joy started to happen. My mom and dad told me that they were proud because they know how hard I work. I really couldn’t believe that I got my first offer on my birthday. That’s something that I’ll remember forever!”

The question now is what position will Statham play in college as he has the ability to play both defensive tackle as well as fullback.

Pittsburgh Sports Now has reached out to Statham to talk about his decision and future with Pitt.
