Last-Place RMU Detroit Draws Mercy in Horizon League First Round

Published

on

The Horizon League men’s basketball tournament is set to begin on Thursday after the regular season came to an end on Saturday night.

Much like the women’s tournament, the first and quarterfinal rounds will take place on the campus of the higher seed for each game instead of Indianapolis, where the entire tournament was originally scheduled to take place.

Competing in its first Horizon League tournament are the Robert Morris Colonials. The 2020 Northeast Conference champions had a rough go of things in their new conference, going just 3-12 against Horizon League opponents. That mark was the worst in the conference, and the Colonials now take on the highest remaining seed that wasn’t granted a first round bye: Detroit Mercy.

RMU is quite familiar with Detroit Mercy since the two sides played on Friday and Saturday. The Colonials struggled in the second half on Saturday in what became an 80-61 loss to the Titans.

Being the bottom seed, the Colonials would take on top-seeded Cleveland State if they were to get by the Titans in the opening round. Cleveland State and RMU have not played this year, as their scheduled series was canceled due to COVID-19.

The seeds and regular season records of each team are as follows:

  1. Cleveland State 16-7, 16-4
  2. Wright State 18-5, 16-4
  3. Oakland 10-17, 10-10
  4. Northern Kentucky 13-10, 11-7
  5. Detroit Mercy 11-9, 10-6
  6. Youngstown State 14-11, 9-11
  7. Green Bay 8-16, 8-12
  8. Milwaukee 8-11, 7-10
  9. IUPUI 8-9, 7-9
  10. Purdue Fort Wayne 7-14, 6-14
  11. UIC 9-12, 6-10
  12. Robert Morris 4-14, 3-12

RMU and Detroit Mercy are slated for a 7:00 p.m. tip-off on Thursday. The game can be streamed on ESPN+.
