WPIAL Boys First Round Recap, Quarterfinal Pairings

The high school boys’ basketball teams have been rolling through the WPIAL playoffs. The first round is officially complete. All that remains is the elite eight in each of the six classifications. In total, 48 high school teams are still in it to win a title.

Boys Class-A – St. Joseph was able to move past Avella due to COVID-19 issues. Western Beaver had an upset as the No. 10 seed over the No. 7 Geibel, winning 54-53. The other high seeds won against the lower seed.

No. 1 Bishop Canevin vs. No. 8 St. Joseph at Bishop Canevin 6 p.m.

No. 2 Rochester vs. No. 10 Western Beaver at Rochester 6 p.m.

No. 3 Eden Christian vs. No. 6 Leechburg at Sewickley Academy 6 p.m.

No. 4 Imani Christian vs. No. 5 Union at Union 6 p.m.

All quarterfinal round games in this classification will be played Friday night at 6 p.m.

Boys Class-2A – No. 13 Winchester Thurston moved past No. 4 Springdale and will now face No. 5 Jeannette looking to make two upsets in a row. Sewickley Academy also took down the No. 7 Carlynton 49-34. They move on to play Greensburg Central Catholic. GCC came in as the second seed but barely moved past No. 18 Serra Catholic in the first round 54-53. This will certainly be an interesting matchup.

No. 1 OLSH vs. No. 8 Shenango at OLSH 12 p.m.

No. 2 Greensburg Central Catholic vs. No. 10 Sewickley Academy at Norwin 2 p.m.

No. 3 Sto-Rox vs. No. 6 Frazier at Sto-Rox at 12 p.m.

No. 5 Jeannette vs. No. 13 Winchester Thurston at Jeannette 12 p.m.

All quarterfinal round games in this classification will be played on Saturday, March 6.

Boys Class-3A – In this bracket a few upsets happened, as the lower seed advanced on three different occasions in the first round. Seton LaSalle took down Brentwood, Laurel beat Washington and Ellwood City edged out past Avonworth.

No. 1 South Allegheny vs. No. 9 Seton LaSalle at South Allegheny 6 p.m.

No. 2 Neshannock vs. No. 7 Beaver Falls at Neshannock 6 p.m.

No. 3 Shady Side Academy vs. No. 11 at Shady Side Ellwood City

No. 4 Aliquippa vs. No. 12 Laurel at Aliquippa 6 p.m.

All quarterfinal round games in this classification will be played on Monday, March 8 at 6 p.m.

Boys Class-4A – Only one upset happened in the 4A classification, as No. 10 Deer Lakes dominated play against No. 7 Elizabeth Forward winning 53-21. Deer Lakes will look to return to the WPIAL championship as did the boys’ soccer team this past fall. Quaker Valley at the No. 4 seed has won their preliminary and first round game and will play No. 5 North Catholic next. The top 6 seeds still remain in this bracket.

No. 1 Belle Vernon vs. No. 8 South Park at Belle Vernon 6 p.m.

No. 2 Lincoln Park vs. No. 10 Deer Lakes at Lincoln Park 6 p.m.

No. 3 Montour vs. No. 6 Central Valley at Montour 6 p.m.

No. 4 Quaker Valley vs. No. 5 Central Catholic at Quaker Valley 6 p.m.

All quarterfinal round games in this classification will be played Monday, March 8 at 6 p.m.

Boys Class-5A – Latrobe in the final seconds moves past Thomas Jefferson 61-59. They earn the upset but will move on to play a heavy favorite No. 2 New Castle. No. 17 McKeesport gave Chartiers Valley a run, but the veteran point guard Brayden Reynolds put up 33 points to carry their team to victory. Gateway also edged out 62-59 over Albert Gallatin.

No. 1 Chartiers Valley vs. No. 8 Gateway at Chartiers Valley 12 p.m.

No. 2 New Castle vs. No. 10 Latrobe at New Castle 12 p.m.

No. 3 Laurel Highlands vs. No. 6 Penn Hills at TBA 12 p.m.

No. 5 Mars vs. No. 13 Trinity at Mars 12 p.m.

All quarterfinal round games in this classification will be played this Saturday at noon.

Boys Class-6A – In this bracket the highest seed won every time in the first round except for No. 9 Seneca Valley over No. 8 Mt. Lebanon. Many top teams remain in what many are saying is the most competitive bracket. Top seeds have advanced but expect close games in the elite 8 rounds.

No. 1 Upper St. Clair vs. No. 9 Seneca Valley at Upper St. Clair 8 p.m.

No. 2 Fox Chapel vs. No. 7 North Allegheny at Fox Chapel 6 p.m.

No. 3 Hempfield vs. No. 6 Pine-Richland at Hempfield 6 p.m.

No. 4 Penn-Trafford vs. No. 5 Butler at Penn-Trafford 6 p.m.

All games are to be played Friday night.
