The Duquesne women’s basketball team improved to 6-2 on the year thanks to a strong third quarter in which they outscored their opponent Delaware 23-13, and another triple-double from Megan McConnell.
Duquesne was led in scoring by Precious Johnson, who put up 17 points in the contest. She was able to lead the team in scoring despite struggling from the three-point line, only shooting 1-for-6 (16.7%). She shot extremely well from inside-the-arc, going 7-for-13 (53.8%).
Johnson was joined in the double-digits by Tess Myers (15 points), Nealle Bernard (14 points) and the aforementioned McConnell who finished with a trouble-double of 12 points, 10 assists and 15 rebounds. Not to be forgotten though, Myers had a strong night shooting as she was 4-for-6 (66.7%) from three-point range.
Defensively, Duquesne held Delaware to just 33.9% shooting including under 30% from three-point range at 27.8%. They lost the turnover battle 22-19, but stifled any chance of a comeback in the fourth quarter by holding Delaware to just 4-for-17 (23.5%) shooting.
The win comes after a loss for Duquesne, just their second on the season. Duquesne fell by six points to Tulsa 65-59 on Thursday. Prior to that their only loss on the year was to Pittsburgh in the City Game, 61-45.
Duquesne will next play Kent State this Wednesday at 6:00 p.m. in the first of two home games this week, with the other against Vermont this upcoming Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
