When new Pitt quarterback Phil Jurkovec spoke to the media for the first time last month, he said that all WPIAL kids should stay home and go to Pitt. Ty Yuhas listened.
Yuhas, a 6-foot-3, 260-pound defensive lineman from Central Catholic High in Pittsburgh in the class of 2024, picked up an offer from hometown Pitt over the weekend and fulfilled a dream by committing to Pitt Thursday.
“This offer means everything to me,” Yuhas told PSN Monday. “It’s what I’ve always wanted. Pitt is my hometown school, it’s also my first big offer. I’ve been down to visit there probably like 10 times. A kid I grew up with, Cruce Brookins, just signed there. A couple of other players that I played with went there.”
Yuhas has flown under the radar in the recruiting world, holding offers from just Kent State and Pitt, but if there’s anyone who can evaluate talent — especially defensive line talent — it’s Charlie Partridge. And that’s exactly who offered Yuhas Saturday.
“Talking with coach Sanders, he told me basically that I’m a local kid, and that they’ve been recruiting me since last June,” Yuhas said. “They really liked how I transitioned from linebacker down to the defensive line.
“Coach Sanders then told me to give coach Partridge a call, and that’s when I called him, and he offered me. Both coaches told me that they really love my work ethic and how I play the game. They see that I always go 100% every play, every snap.”
Yuhas is new to the position, dropping down to play along Central Catholic’s defensive line, but his motor — a key trait Pitt’s coaching staff values — is noticeable on every play. A strong senior season coming off the edge for Central Catholic should be expected — along with a a number of sacks and tackles for loss.
While Yuhas hasn’t been ranked by any of the major recruiting websites, that will change in the days and weeks ahead, especially as he makes it back out onto the field for his senior season at Central Catholic.
Yuhas joins a 2024 recruiting class that features four-star wide receiver DayDay Farmer (Cocoa, Florida), four-star defensive lineman Jahsear Whittington (Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) and three-star running back Juelz Goff (York, Pennsylvania).
Yuhas also continues the Central Catholic to Pitt pipeline, which has produced John Petrishen, David Green, Elliot Donald and Gavin Thomson over the last few seasons.
