Pitt’s freshman class will undoubtedly play a huge role in the Panthers rotation this year.
Specifically, the young back court, made up of Jaland Lowe and Carlton Carrington, will have huge shoes to fill as Jamarius Burton, Nelly Cummings, Greg Elliott, and Nike Sibande are all now playing pro ball. While Carrington has been the projected starter at point guard by several national media outlets, Lowe is now receiving national attention as the season nears.
The Athletic’s Tobias Bass ranked Lowe, a 6-foot-3 guard out of Houston, Texas, as a top-20 overall freshman in college basketball this season. Bass ranked Lowe behind just four prospects: Stephon Castle, Ja’Kobe Walter, Isaiah Collier, and Sam Walters. Bass has Lowe and two other ACC prospects on the list: Caleb Foster (Duke) and Elliot Cadeau (UNC).
Although Carrington was not included in Bass’s rankings, he did receive some praise as well, as Bass thinks the two will make for one of the best young back courts in the nation.
“Both freshmen can play either guard spot, and I’m excited to see how they develop and play alongside one another,” Bass said. “Both have good size, see the floor well, and can score the ball. They are also coaches’ sons and have been prepared for moments like this. There will be bumps in the road for these two, but by the year’s end, they will be seen as one of the best freshmen backcourts in the country.
