PIAA Football State Championship Matchups Set

With the PIAA Football Semifinals completed, the upcoming state championship matchups and schedule are set.

Six teams from Western Pennsylvania—five WPIAL teams and a Pittsburgh City League program—will make the trip to Mechanicsburg next week for their respective state championship games, each held at Cumberland Valley High School. Here’s how the matchups shake out.

Beginning with 6A, the North Allegheny Tigers took down Harrisburg 24-12. They’ll face last year’s state champions, the St. Joseph’s Prep Hawks, who obliterated Central Bucks South 49-0 in their semifinal contest. That matchup will take place at 7 pm on Saturday, December 9.

Moving to 5A, the Peters Township Indians outlasted Cocalico 14-9, advancing to face the Imhotep Charter Panthers—last year’s runner up—at 7 pm on Friday. Four-star Pitt commit Jahsear Whittington plays for the Panthers, making this a matchup to keep an eye on for a number of Western Pennsylvania interests.

Aliquippa rolled past Sellinsgrove 52-32 at 4A, setting up a championship date with Dallas at 7 pm Thursday. This marks the third year in a row the Quips advance to the 4A title game, as they fell to Bishop McDevitt in last year’s championship.

Belle Vernon punched their ticket to the championship game for the second consecutive year, as they defeated Neumann-Goretti to win last year’s 3A title. This time, they’ll take on Northwestern Lehigh, with that game kicking off at 1 pm on Saturday.

Westinghouse advances to a rematch with Southern Columbia after dropping Beaver Falls 28-8 in the semifinals. The Tigers beat Westinghouse 37-22 in last year’s 2A championship game, and the Bulldogs will get their chance at revenge at 1 pm Friday.

Fort Cherry advances to their first-ever state championship game. They’ll face last year’s PIAA 1A state champions, Steelton-Highspire, at 1 pm Thursday.
