Pitt Athletics had another solid showing for their fall sports and finished No. 25 in the final LEARFIELD Director’s Cup Fall Standings.
Three of the six fall programs for Pitt brought in points for the athletics department, which includes men’s soccer, women’s soccer and volleyball.
Volleyball continues to excel under head coach Dan Fisher, as they made it to their third straight final four this past season. They reverse swept rival Louisville twice, the first time coming at the Petersen Events Center in front of a program record crowd of 8,856 people to earn a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament. The second reverse sweep came in the Elite Eight at Fitzgerald Field House, with the home crowd spurring on Pitt to victory.
Women’s soccer had their best ever season in program history, with head coach Randy Waldrum in his sixth season at the helm. They made it to the ACC Tournament semifinals for the first time, defeating No. 3 North Carolina 2-1 in extra time on the road. They also earned their first trip to the Elite Eight, with an incredible 4-3 win over No. 2 Arkansas on the road in the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament and then a 3-0 victory over No. 6 Memphis in the Sweet 16.
Men’s soccer didn’t make it as far as they did in the past few seasons, ending a streak of three straight Elite Eights and two College Cups during that time, but still had a solid season all around. Head coach Jay Vidovich in his eighth season rebuilt a team that lost seven to eight starters the season prior to make it back to the NCAA Tournament for the fifth straight season.
Pitt volleyball finished in third place, receiving 83 points, women’s soccer finished in fifth place, receiving 73 points and men’s soccer finished in 33rd place, receiving 25 points to total 181.00. Pitt finished ninth in the ACC, with UNC at No. 1, Notre Dame at No. 4, Virginia, Syracuse, Florida State and Louisville No. 10-No.13, Clemson at No. 15 and NC State at No. 19.
