Pitt Makes the Top Five for 2023 Four-Star Defensive End Jameial Lyons

Pitt hasn’t dipped into the Philadelphia area much in recent years, with Javon McIntyre from Imhotep Charter serving as the only recruit in the last five years, but a top Philadelphia recruit could change that.

2023 four-star defensive end Jameial Lyons narrowed down his Top 5 Friday night, and Pitt was included among the top contenders for his signature, along with West Virginia, Penn State, Illinois and Cincinnati.

Lyons, a 6-foot-4, 245-pound defensive end from Roman Catholic in Philadelphia, narrowed his choices down from Boston College, Bowling Green, Cincinnati, Illinois, Massachusetts, Morgan State, Nebraska, Penn State, Pitt, Temple, Virginia Tech and West Virginia.

With Lyons’ recruiting process heating up since the start of 2022, making visits to Penn State and West Virginia since the turn of the year, he said narrowing down his choices wasn’t especially hard.

“You know, it wasn’t hard putting my Top 5 together,” Lyons told Pittsburgh Sports Now. “My Top 5 is schools where I feel like I have great relationships with the coaching staff and feel they have a great defensive scheme that’s fit me best, and I felt like Pitt had what’s best for me.”

Lyons has built a relationship with safeties coach Cory Sanders through his recruiting process, the pair corresponding on an almost daily basis, and it’s developed into a strong bond despite Lyons not being able to make it out to Pittsburgh yet.

“My guy, coach (Cory) Sanders, that’s my dawg,” Lyons said. “We talk almost every other day, literally, and just meeting him for the first time when he visited my school one day. We just clicked, you know we talk about everything from what Pitt can offer to checking on my family to making sure everything is good, and as a recruit I think that’s a big impact on where you know if a school is the right choice for you. I appreciate coach Sanders for that.”

Pitt has a history of being a top destination for defensive linemen, especially defensive ends in Charlie Partridge’s defensive line room, and Lyons is excited to learn more about Pitt in the coming weeks and months. And it’s not just the football he’s excited to integrate into either.

“I’m interested in everything about Pitt, from their history to their culture to this day,” Lyons said. “What made me really put Pitt in my Top 5 is the ton of talent they have put in the NFL over years and that makes me want to be a part of something special like that. Also another thing is academics, that’s the most important part.”

247Sports rates Lyons as the 464th-ranked recruit in the 2023 class, rated as the 25th-ranked edge rusher and the seventh-ranked recruit from Pennsylvania. Rivals hasn’t given Lyons a national ranking, but he’s slotted as the 35th-ranked weakside defensive end and the 19th-ranked recruit from Pennsylvania.

While Lyons doesn’t have a date set yet for an official visit to Pitt, planning on a date in April, he’s looking forward to making it out to Pittsburgh for the first time to experience the entire process.

Pitt has landed one recruit in the 2023 class thus far, in the form of three-star athlete Zion Fowler out of St. Peter’s Prep in Jersey City, New Jersey.

With education being “the most important”, WVU should get trimmed off this list fairly soon
