Pitt has parted ways with women’s basketball radio play-by-play broadcaster George Von Benko, Pittsburgh Sports Now has learned.

Von Benko had been with Pitt since 2012. Before that, he spent 10 years as the color broadcaster for Duquesne men’s basketball. He also hosts a show on WMBS in Uniontown.

Pitt women’s basketball coach Suzie McConnell-Serio was fired after a 10-20 season in 2017-18. Former Florida State assistant coach Lance White was hired to replace her. Pitt has hired seven new head coaches since Heather Lyke took over as athletic director in 2017

The departure of Von Benko continues a recent series of departures of longtime campus fixtures around Pitt athletics, including men’s basketball trainer Tony Salesi and football equipment manager Tim Enright.

Jesse Irwin was Pitt’s color broadcaster last season. It’s unknown if he will be returning to the broadcasts. Pitt’s games have been broadcast on WJAS 1320 AM.
