Steelers running back and Pitt grad James Conner will serve as Pitt’s honorary captain for the Panthers’ game against Virginia Tech at Heinz Field on Friday.

Conner, in his second season with the Steelers, has replaced Le’Veon Bell as the Steelers’ starting running back and has 706 rushing yards, 379 receiving yards and 10 total touchdowns over the first eight games of the 2018 season.

With Pitt from 2013-16, Conner rushed for 3,733 yards and 52 touchdowns, both second only to Hall of Famer Tony Dorsett in Pitt’s record books. Dorsett will also be at Saturday’s game as part of a promotion with the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Pitt has a former player serve as an honorary captain for each game. Other honorary captains this season have been Mike Ditka, Zeke Gadson, Bobby Grier, Mike McGlynn, Benjie Pryor and Rod Rutherford.
