Pitt Basketball 2019 Recruiting Board: Who Is Pitt Still Pursuing?

Published

on

Pitt’s 2019 basketball recruiting hit a bit of a speedbump this week when five-star center Kofi Cockburn decided to commit to Illinois. The big man from Oak Hill Academy was someone that Jeff Capel wanted to man his center position for the next few years.

That’s not going to happen, so it’s onto the next recruit for Pitt and Capel.

There’s no doubt that the Pitt staff has to be a bit frustrated after coming close but not being able to close with guys like Cockburn, four-star forward Anthony Walker (Miami), four-star forward Tyrese Samuel (Seton Hall) and three-star forward Chris Ledlum (Harvard). However, these guys have been around long enough to know that in recruiting, you’re going to lose more than you win. Also, they haven’t even been at Pitt for a year so to expect them to instantly start landing every four- and five-star recruit they target is unrealistic.

Capel has multiple roster spots to fill, whether that comes via a high school senior, transfer or graduate transfer. With the previous names that we mentioned as no longer being options, who are the names to keep an eye on? It seems like time to reset the Pitt recruiting board.

2019 PITT BASKETBALL RECRUITING TARGETS:

⭐⭐⭐⭐ C Qudus Wahab (6-foot-10, 230 pounds): As we’ve reported at length, Wahab’s final five teams are Pitt, UConn, Georgetown, Syracuse and Virginia. In reality, his decision is most likely coming down to Pitt and Georgetown. We’re told that Wahab was set to select Pitt a few weeks ago but canceled his announcement. It seems that some people close to him are trying to steer him toward Georgetown. The situation is currently in a holding pattern and a final decision could happen at any time, or still drag out.

⭐⭐⭐ forward Karim Coulibaly (6-foot-8, 230 pounds): Like with Wahab, there is nothing new to report with Coulibaly. He was planning to make an unofficial visit to Pitt two weeks ago but we’re told this never happened. In all likelihood, Coulibaly will be deciding between Pitt and St. Joseph’s, the two teams that have been recruiting him the longest and hardest.

⭐⭐⭐⭐ combo guard Dereon Seabron (6-foot-5, 180 pounds): The Pitt staff just offered Seabron a scholarship two days ago. The native of Norfolk, Virginia also has also visited Minnesota and has offers from Georgia, Providence, SMU, Temple, VCU and Virginia along with a host of mid-majors.

⭐⭐⭐ forward Gerald Drumgoole (6-foot-6, 200 pounds): Drumgoole is a small forward from New York that currently attends school in Indiana and has been recruited by Pitt assistant Tim O’Toole. Drumgoole has already made official visits to South Carolina and Minnesota. He also holds an offers from DePaul, Georgia, George Mason, George Washington, Maryland, St. Bonaventure, UMass and other mid majors. Drumgoole is also a three-star tight end prospect.

⭐⭐⭐ forward Jalyn McCreary (6-foot-8, 215): Jeff Capel and Milan Brown were out to see McCreary over the Christmas break but haven’t yet extended an offer to him. The Georgia native does have offers from DePaul, Xavier, South Florida and UMass. I’m told that if Pitt does offer, he’d definitely want to visit and they’d be high on his list. However, McCreary has given some indications on Twitter that he could be making his decision soon.

⭐⭐⭐⭐ forward Justin Champagnie (6-foot-5, 180 pounds) and ⭐⭐⭐ forward Julian Champagnie (6-foot-7, 200 pounds): These brothers received offers from Pitt last week and are currently in the Class of 2020. While they are academically eligible to re-classify to 2019, the current plan isn’t to jump ahead and they told PSN that they’re likely to stay as juniors. Things can change, but that’s their mindset as of this week.
