Central Catholic’s AJ Beatty’s recruitment has been crazy.

Over the past month, he’s picked up 19 college offers. But things went to another level on Monday as he received the news that he’d earned an offer from Pitt.

“Coach Harley called me, said Beatty. “He doesn’t know yet where they’d want me to play. They want me to come camp in the summer and workout at both tight end and defensive end and see where I’d be able to help the team more.”

”When he texted me and asked him to call him, I wouldn’t say I had a feeling the offer was coming. They’ve been recruiting me for awhile now so I just thought at some point it could come.”

”I’m at home so I told my mom,” said Beatty. “She went to Pitt so she’s extremely excited. Plus, I’m a local kid and they’re the hometown school so it’s really nice because I grew up watching them since I was a local kid.”

I asked Beatty if the news was more excitement or relief?

”Maybe relief because of the location of my school and we’re right next to Pitt. Honestly though, I don’t try and worry about offers and that’s not why I play. I play because I love the sport and whatever happens will happen. I just got lucky getting the hometown offer.”

Beatty (6’5”, 250) has received more offers, texts and visits from coaches than he ever imagined would be happening. He tells me that the past month has been a dream come true.

”I really can’t explain what this has been like,” said Beatty. “The best word is probably crazy because it’s been like every other day. Schools that I would have thought of. It’s just nice that all the hard work is paying off and my dreams are coming true from playing ball since I was 7 or 8 and now I’ll be playing on Saturdays.”

Beatty doesn’t have a timeline for making a decision and says he’ll just know when it’s the right time. However, he does admit getting his first Power 5 offer is big.

”The fact that they offered first is a big deal. This first Power 5 offer might break the ice. Plus, Pitt is the hometown school and that’s the best you’re going to get.”
