ESPN Mock Draft Projects Former Pitt Star in Second Round

There wasn’t a Pitt Panther selected in the first round of the NFL Draft for the first time in a couple of years, but there’s a chance a Panther could be going Friday night in the second round.

Matt Goncalves — a 6-foot-6, 327-pound tackle from Manorville, N.Y. — has been regarded as the top Pitt prospect the whole offseason, despite missing the majority of last season, and an ESPN analyst is projecting him to land in a pretty good spot.

In a second round mock draft by Steve Muench of ESPN, he projects Goncalves will be selected by the Kansas City Chiefs with the final pick of the round, writing:

“The Chiefs have a need at left tackle and could upgrade at right tackle. Goncalves can play both and he has the potential to develop into a starter early in his career.”

It may seem a bit ambitious for Goncalves to be selected in the second round, with most draft analysts projecting him as an early Day 3 selection. Still, it would certainly be a nice landing spot for the Manorville native.
