Published

on

Antonio Petrucelli, a rising senior at Owen J Roberts high school committed to wrestle for the University of Pittsburgh on Thursday. Petrucelli wrestled 138 last year and placed 5th at the Pennsylvania AAA state tournament. He qualified for states as a sophomore but did not place. His career record through three seasons is 109-39 with 54 pins.

“The biggest thing that drew me to Pitt is the environment and culture within the entire community. It reminds me a lot of my hometown which was very important to me.” OJR is in Chester County, PA near Pottstown.

“My favorite part about campus is there are so many opportunities and things to do.” Additionally, Pitt has both majors Antonio may consider pursuing: business/finance and civil engineering.

He is excited to wrestle for Keith Gavin and company. “I believe the coaching staff has a wide spread of technique and different styles… personally, I love to learn new things within the sport and I just want to get better. I believe they’re the right people for me.”

Speaking of different styles, Petrucelli had some freestyle success last summer placing 4th at Cadet Nationals in Fargo.

With Taleb Rahmani graduating after this upcoming season, Pitt will likely have a hole at 157. Though Petrucelli competed at 138 for the post-season last year, he did wrestle some at 152. It may have just been filled.

An important weight, but we will see how much better he can get still. Where did the other 4 kids go for example. I assume that this group of coaches is as good at scouting as they are at coaching. In which case he may be the gem regardless of one tournament placement.

Always loved PITT wrestling…Looks like Coach Gavin is building a nice little Powerhouse here in the ‘Burg. Looking forward to some Rockin’ nights this Winter at the Fitz’ Best of Luck Panthers! TG
