PITTSBURGH — On a beautiful April afternoon at Heinz Field, Blue was able to top Gold by a final score of 14-7 to close Pitt’s 2019 spring practices.

The first half got off to a slow start as the Blue and Gold could not establish any offensive rhythm.

Blue struck first midway through the third quarter to break the scoreless tie, as Kenny Pickett hit Tre Tipton on a 13-yard touchdown pass. It capped off a six-play, 69-yard drive.

Pickett connected with Tipton again at the 1:23 mark of the third quarter on a perfectly executed fade pass into the corner of the end zone for a 22-yard touchdown. That touchdown capped off an eight-play, 55-yard drive, giving Blue a 14-0 lead.

Gold had two long drives in the second half that both ended without any points being scored.

The first drive got down into the red zone before Paris Ford had an interception off a deflected Nick Patti pass. The second long drive took Gold down into the redzone once again, but on fourth down, Shocky Jaques-Louis couldn’t get a foot down in bounds after catching freshman quarterback Davis Beville’s pass.

Gold was finally able to break through and score a touchdown with 18 seconds left in the game when Beville connected with tight end Will Gragg on an 11-yard touchdown pass, cutting the lead to 14-7.

For Blue, Pickett went 10 for 14 for 125 yards and two touchdowns. Pickett was just 2 for 4 at the half, with 15 yards. In the second half, things improved drastically, as Pickett was able to methodically move Blue down the field on both drives he played, leading to touchdowns on both drives.

Tipton ended the game with three reception for 43 yards.

Running back Todd Sibley ended the game with three rushes for a total of three yards for Blue after being limited in game action after he briefly left the game in the third quarter, with a sprained ankle.

The other Blue running back, V’Lique Carter had six attempts for zero yards. He was also used on Blue’s defense, rotating in at the cornerback position.

For Gold, quarterback Davis Beville led the way as he went 13 for 17 for 157 passing yards and one touchdown pass. Fellow Gold quarterback Nick Patti went 6 for 15 for 40 yards.

Starting Gold running back A.J. Davis totaled nine yards on six rushing attempts. Leading the way for Gold at receiver was sophomore Shocky Jacques-Louis, who compiled three reception on 51 yards.

Pitt will next take to Heinz Field on Aug. 31, when the Panthers will start their ACC Coastal Division title defense against Virginia.
