2020 4-Star PG R.J. Davis Picks North Carolina Over Pitt

The Pitt basketball program landed two priority recruits last week just received some bad news to start the week as they lost out on their top target.

2020 4-star New York point guard R.J. Davis announced at a morning press conference that he was committing to North Carolina over Pitt, Marquette and Georgetown.

This is a big recruiting loss for Jeff Capel because of the skill level Davis possesses. The Panthers were hoping he’d be their leader at point guard for the foreseeable future.

Despite being the last team to get in on his recruitment and offering him late in the process, Davis selected Roy Williams and the history of the North Carolina basketball program. The Tar Heels have now landed 3 elite point guards in their last two recruiting classes: Davis, 5-star Cole Anthony and 5-star Caleb Love.

Capel still intends to take a point guard in this class and their attention will now turn to 3-star Shakeel Moore from North Carolina, someone the entire staff visited a few weeks ago.

So, Davis might be really good, but I’m sorry, he will not even see the court at UNC based on the talent that has already committed to Roy Williams. UNC will continue to re-stock over the next couple of years and Davis will keep getting knocked further down the depth chart. Seems like a great kid and player, but have to shake your head about this decision. Choosing Pitt or not, he could have put himself in a position to be a starter at another school on Day One. SMH.
