Pitt’s secondary is one of the best in the country this year, and the team is trying to keep it that way for the foreseeable future.

Last night, safeties coach Cory Sanders extended an offer to an elite defensive back from Florida.

2020 3-star defensive back Derek Bermudez from Jacksonville received an offer over the phone from Sanders. This development came after Bermudez decommitted from Florida State following their dismissal of head coach Willie Taggart.

”That was a hard thing for me to do because I really liked Florida State but something I felt like I had to do because of the uncertainty there now,” Bermudez told PSN this morning.

Bermudez (6’1”, 180) becoming available is a big thing because of his skill level and he’ll have his pick of schools that he wants to look at. Prior to committing to Florida State, he held offers from Power Five programs like Miami, Ole Miss, Illinois, Virginia Tech, Auburn, Florida, Georgia, LSU, Oklahoma, Oregon and West Virginia.

Pitt’s trying to get involved but it won’t be easy. While speaking to him last night, Sanders tried to emphasize a couple things to Bermudez.

”Coach was just telling me about some of the kids that commited from Florida and players that’s on the roster that’s from Florida,” said Bermudez.

”He was also telling me about the defensive backs that they’ve put in the league and that with a couple guys graduating that I could come in right away and play.”

Pitt is working hard to trying to get Bermudez to make a visit real soon.

“Coach wants me to come up and visit sometime this month. I’m going to see if I can do it.”

Considering he just de-committed a couple days ago, Bermudez and his family are trying to digest all of the attention he’s receiving and trying to determine his next course of action. He did tell me that he will make visits to both Virginia Tech and Ole Miss.
