Pittsburgh Native Mike McCarthy Hired by Dallas Cowboys

Pittsburgh native Mike McCarthy is back in the NFL as the new head coach of the Dallas Cowboys, according to multiple media reports.

McCarthy, a Greenfield native and graduate of Bishop Boyle High School in Homestead, spent the 2019 season out of coaching after spending the previous 13 years as the head coach of the Green Bay Packers.

He left Green Bay with a 125-77-2 record and won one Super Bowl, defeating his hometown Steelers in Super Bowl XLV in 2011.

In Dallas, he will replace Jason Garrett, who was let go after an 8-8 season. Garrett made the playoffs three times in 10 seasons, losing in the divisional round each time.

McCarthy is noted as an offensive coach and oversaw the bulk of Aaron Rodgers’ career in Green Bay. Before becoming a head coach, McCarthy was an offensive coordinator or quarterbacks coach for the San Francisco 49ers in 2005 and the New Orleans Saints from 2000-04, the Packers in 1999 and the Kansas City Chiefs from 1993-98.

McCarthy got his coaching start at Fort Hays State and also worked at Pitt from 1989-92 before moving to the NFL ranks.
