Pitt head coach Jeff Capel and his wife Kanika donated lunch to the staff at UPMC Hillman Cancer Center on Thursday, the hospital said on Twitter on Thursday.
The Capels sent catered lunches to the Shadyside hospital from Food for Thought Deli in a gesture of kindness toward the medical personnel that have been on the front lines of the COVID-19 pandemic.
“It was our pleasure!” Capel wrote on Twitter. “You guys, along with all medical personnel and first responders everywhere, are the TRUE HEROES! You ARE APPRECIATED!!!”
Though a North Carolina native in his second year at Pitt, Capel has made supporting the local community during this time of crisis a significant priority.
“It is very important to support local businesses, especially during a time of crisis,” Capel told PSN on March 17. “And that is what we are in right now, a time of crisis. These local businesses are our family. We have relationships with them. They are always there for us. They help take care of us. We help each other. During times of crisis, you realize how much you need each other. Right now, we ALL NEED EACH OTHER!”
