The PIAA has announced its postseason plans for fall sports, including a reduced state playoff fields and football championship games to be played Nov. 27 and 28.
The PIAA board approved the changes on Wednesday. The slimmed down state playoffs field will include only the eight district champions in each classification. That would mean that state semifinals will be played Nov. 19-20 and state quarterfinals Nov. 12-13.
In Class-6A, the WPIAL champion will enter the state playoffs in the quarterfinals, so the WPIAL title game will be the weekend of Nov. 6-7.
In the five other classes, the WPIAL champions will enter the state playoffs in the semifinals, so the WPIAL title games can be held the weekend of Nov. 13-14.
WPIAL Class-6A will qualify four teams for the postseason, with semifinals Oct. 30-31. The other classes will qualify eight teams, with WPIAL quarterfinals Oct. 30-31, semifinals Nov. 6-7 and championship games No. 13-14.
This year’s WPIAL championship games are not expected to be played at Heinz Field. Venues for the postseason have not yet been announced.
