The latest prospect to receive interest from Pitt in the transfer portal is grad transfer Melik Martin, a Monmouth transfer who is originally from York, Pennsylvania.
Martin is an explosive, bouncy forward with a strong build at 6-foot-6, 200 pounds. A consistent finisher inside with a steadily improving outside game, Martin is a very intriguing prospect in the portal.
Martin played four seasons at Monmouth, earning his way to a much larger role in his senior year. After averaging 5.1 points and three rebounds per game in his junior year, he improved his numbers to 12.5 points and 5.8 rebounds per game this season. The lefty had his best game of the year in early March, when he put up 24 points on 10-of-12 field goals against Rider.
Martin has recently heard from: Towson, La Salle, St. Bonaventure, Robert Morris, FGCU, Pittsburgh, West Virginia, Charlotte, and Missouri State.
Martin also mightily improved his shooting numbers this season as opposed to his junior year. This year, he shot 49% from the field, 38% from 3-point range, and 73% from the free-throw line, all numbers higher than his previous season.Â
On top of that improvement, Martin also snapped out of a cold start to the season and really turned it on for the second half of the year. After making four of just 15 attempts from 3-point range in the first nine games of the season, Martin gained confidence in his stroke and went 19 of 43 from deep in the remaining 11 games, a 44% mark.
An unranked prospect out of high school, Martin held offers from FIU, St. Bonaventure, Duquesne, and a few other smaller schools prior to committing to Monmouth.
Now with plenty of schools after him, it will be interesting to see his recruitment play out in the coming weeks.
Not interested. No power 5 offers out of high school. Modest success at an NEC school. Not an ACC talent.
