Just three days after committing to Robert Morris, forward Matt Mayers was recognized for his excellent sophomore season at Hutchinson Community College with JuCo All-American honors.
“My experience playing JuCo basketball was a really good learning experience that took me on,” Mayers told Pittsburgh Sports Now after his commitment. “Not just for basketball, but for life, so, I appreciate playing JuCo.”
After playing a small role in his freshman season at Hutchinson, Mayers ramped up the productivity in his award-winning sophomore season. In his most recent year, he averaged 17.8 points per game on 59.6% shooting from the field. On top of his JuCo All-American award, Mayers also earned first-team all Jayhawk West Conference honors as well as MVP of the division.
At RMU, Mayers is looking to take on a large role on a roster filled with lots of new faces to the program. The skilled forward is a strong rebounder with soft touch around the rim and good finishing ability.
“I am an unselfish player,” he said about his game. “I can put the ball on the floor, I can play inside-out, I can shoot, and I have a high IQ within the game of basketball. My defensive skills are pretty good. I can block shots, guard other guards, and guard other people that don’t play my position usually.”
