2023 Four-Star Forward Papa Kante Commits to Pitt

Papa Kante on his Pitt visit.

On Monday, four-star forward Papa Kante committed to Pitt, joining Jeff Capel’s Panthers for the 2023-24 season.

Kante, a 6-foot-9 forward, is ranked as a four-star prospect in the class of 2023.

He played his high-school ball for South Kent School in Connecticut, took an official visit to Pitt last June, and later announced in September that the Panthers made his top five schools list along with Memphis, Maryland, Michigan, and Rutgers. However, Kante initially committed to and signed with Michigan. Then, on April 18, Kante was released from his National Letter of Intent and de-committed from Michigan. Now, he commits to join Capel’s Panthers.

Pitt was Kante’s first ever offer back when he was a young prospect in high school.

“That’s always something important in the relationship & recruiting process,” his coach Raphael Chillious told PSN in 2022.

The Panthers currently have one open scholarships after landing transfers Ishmael Leggett (Rhode Island) and Zack Austin (High Point) this spring. Pitt’s incoming freshman class now includes Kante, Jaland Lowe, Carlton Carrington, and Marlon Barnes. 247 Sports ranks Kante as the No. 67 player in the country, just ahead of Lowe, who is now ranked as the No. 82 player in the nation.

The Panthers’ current front court includes Blake Hinson at the four, as well as Federiko Federiko at the five. Kante likely slides in at the five spot behind Federiko, but could also potentially start at the four if Hinson were to play the wing. Both Guillermo Diaz-Graham and Jorge Diaz-Graham will come off the bench down low, along with wing William Jeffress.
