Pitt student-athletes are excelling in the playing field, but also have done so off it this past calendar year.
The Athletic department is sending nine representatives to the 2023 ACC Unity Tour, which will take place July 9-12 in Washington D.C. The student-athletes that will represent Pitt are Ellie Breech (women’s soccer), Kendall Brown (softball), Cam Guess (football), KJ Marshall (men’s basketball) and Ciara Ward (Gymnastics). Joining the student athletes are administrators in Aysha Muhammad (Life Skills), John Center (Leadership Team) and Shelia Velez (School of Law/FAR), as well as associate head coach Alonzo Webb III (track and field).
The tour will consist of visits to the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum and the National Museum of African American History & Culture, DC Community Service Projects, as well as a Gender Equity & Sports Panel.
Every ACC school will have six student athletes and four coaches or staff on this Unity Tour. The point of the tour is to make sure that student-athletes have support throughout their educational excursions, especially in the area of social justice, as a part of the conference’s platform, ACC UNITE.
This is the second ACC Unity Tour, as representatives last year went to Selma and Montgomery, Ala. to have an immersive trip in understanding of the Civil Rights movement.
Pitt also placed a record number of student-athletes on the honor roll this past academic calendar year, with 343. This is the second time that the athletic department has had more than 300, with 316 in 2020-21 and the third consecutive year with more than 290 student-athletes.
Pitt had 293 student-athletes make the honor roll in 2021-22, so this past year was a 50 student-athlete upgrade.
