PSN Poll Question: How Many Games Does Pitt Football Win in 2023

Pitt football

At the start of the 2023 season, nine wins was a popular pick when asked about how many games Pitt football would win this season.

Following disappointing losses to both Cincinnati and West Virginia, Pitt is now 1-2 and confidence from the fan base isn’t particularly high.

The 1-2 start is the worst since 2019, which saw Pitt lose to Virginia at home and No. 13 Penn State on the road. If Pitt loses to No. 17 North Carolina this weekend, they will start 1-3 for the first time since 2017, which saw them lose three straight games to No. 4 Penn State on the road, No. 9 Oklahoma State at home and Georgia Tech on the road.

Poor play for redshirt senior quarterback Phil Jurkovec has been a major issue and a large part of why Pitt has struggled to start 2023.

He currently ranks second worst in the FBS with a .467 completion percentage, making just 35 of his 75 throws this season. He is only one of two of 112 FBS quarterbacks to have a lower completion percentage than .500, with Baylor’s Sawyer Robertson the worst at .452.

Jurkovec’s completions per game, 11.67 through the first three contests, is also tied for the second worst in the FBS with Kent State’s Michael Alaimo. His 474 passing yards and his abysmal 29.1 quarterback rating are both the worst in the ACC.

Panthers head coach Pat Narduzzi plans to stick with Jurkovec for the foreseeable future, despite booing from fans at the last home game.

Pitt’s nine remaining opponents have a combined record of 24-4 while seven of those nine teams are still undefeated and four of the opponents are currently ranked.

This Pitt team is going to need figure things out or even making it to a bowl game would be an extreme longshot.

Looking at Pitt’s remaining schedule (vs. No. 17 North Carolina, at Virginia Tech, vs. Louisville, at Wake Forest, at No. 9 Notre Dame, vs. No. 4 Florida State, at Syracuse, vs. Boston College, at No. 18 Duke), of those nine remaining games, how many will Pitt football win?

Actually need two poll questions:

With Jurkovec at QB – one (already lost to two of the worst teams on their schedule…any victories beyond Wofford will be just through dumb luck).

With anyone else at QB – fielding a solid defense and even a remotely effective passing attack, this team would compete with all but a couple of the opponents on their schedule.

Honestly, how can you see them winning any of those games given what we’ve seen?

With a q.b. change, a two back, two tight end offense and consistency on defense, Pitt could win 8 games. Without an immediate change at quarterback, 5 games at best.

Hopefully we attack the intermediate middle behind the linebackers moving forward with curls. Open all night against WVU in 2nd and 3rd long. Two tight end packages even outside the hashes. Need to have the play calls attack in the intermediate middle of the field. Even if it is RB insider curls instead of flats.

Phil can’t read defenses and his OL is terrible. Good in theory but they don’t have the personnel to execute anything. I said last year this one would be bad, and the scary thing is next year’s team will be worse as the lack of depth and recruiting is starting to pile up

Not true. Narduzzi has depth through and through. Two deep is sound at PITT and recruiting is doing fine job. Use of transfer portal is sound. He runs a clean disciplined program and needs applauded in that regard. His podium speeches are not intended to appease the angry mob, he defends his staff and players. That is exemplary in today’s age. If you go back and watch the footage on ESPN Watch you’ll see WVU made some big plays in crucial situations. Otherwise it was equally matched performance. Where I see room for improvement is in route running and disparity.… Read more »

You don’t know what your talking bout

You Pitt fans love talking crap about WVU being one of the worst teams on your schedule. But WVU BEAT YOUR ASS and you still want to talk crap. Pitt is one of the worst teams in the country. WVU played a tight game against Penn St all way into the fourth quarter and if our QB didn’t get hurt it would have been 50 -6

Not true at all! You are very delusional.
We have one of the worst QB and didn’t get our ass beat! Lost, yes, but not asses beat. Congratulations on the win, and I guess according to you, we beat your asses last year then. BTW, this is a Pitt site and PSU losers, who don’t have a life.
H2P!

Hey Michael, calling WVU a bad team was based on the fact that multiple outlets have predicted them to finish last in Big 12.
And, if you watched the game, you may have noticed that the announcers keep wondered aloud why Pitt wasn’t attacking a terribly weak secondary that ranked 119th in the country over the past two years.
Perhaps you should direct your anger towards the national media instead.

I drive 4 hours each way to go to Pitt football games. I have only missed 4 in the last 20 years due to family events. I will not be going to the game this weekend as I feel it isn’t worth my effort if they aren’t going to give their best effort and replace the QB or OC. The time, gas money, hotel…it is a decent investment every week. I didn’t miss any of the Stull/Sunseri days during Cignetti’s last debacle. Now we have this. I just can’t say it is worth my effort. Cignetti has ruined many weekends… Read more »
