Once again, Pitt’s Bub Carrington has been recognized by the ACC for his elite play during his rookie campaign.
On Monday afternoon, Carrington was named ACC Rookie of the Week by the league for the fourth time this season. This past week, in two games, he averaged 18 points, five rebounds, and 3.5 assists per game for the Panthers, who went 1-1 on the week with a loss to No. 8 North Carolina and a win over Louisville on the road.Ā Carrington set a career high with 20 points in the loss to UNC, and followed it up with a 16-point effort against the Cardinals in a win. According to the Panthers, Carrington is one of six players in all of NCAA basketball averaging 14.5+ points, five-plus rebounds, and five-plus assists per game.
“I think there is a lot of natural ability that he has,” head coach Jeff Capel said on Monday. “One of the biggest things that I don’t think you can teach is a feel — I think he has a great feel for the game. But, teams have thrown a lot of different looks at him, they’ve dropped, they’ve waited for the ball screen, they’ve tried to be aggressive, they’ve switched, they’ve tried to be very physical. It is impressive, the fact that he’s been able to watch tape, to learn, to come from a timeout, we can talk to him about what they’re trying to do, and to be able to make those adjustments.”
On the season, Carrington is shooting 43% from the field and 32% from three-point range. He has started all 15 games this season, and is playing more than 32 minutes per game as a freshman. With the honor, Carrington ties former Panther Sean Miller (current Xavier coach) with four ACC R.O.W. awards.
