Upon walking into the UPMC Cooper Fieldhouse Monday evening, one would see Duquesne Women’s Basketball Coach Dan Burt and his staff adorned in Viking helmets and the simple question is what gives?
The answer is a very intentional one as it goes back to his “burn the ship” mantra he has preached to his team all season long.
Duquesne basketball on Pittsburgh Sports Now is sponsored by The Summit Academy: setting young men on the path to a better future.
“It is very simply, there’s no retreat,” Burt explained. “We learned this from John Duken who is a friend of our program and successful businessman. He spoke to our program a couple of years ago about the Vikings when they landed for warfare that they burned the ships, there was no retreat, there was no surrender, there was no alternative. That’s how we’ve looked at this March and the Atlantic 10 tournament since we’ve planned our season back in July and August.”
Duquesne, seeded fifth in the Atlantic 10 Championship is preparing for a Thursday afternoon tilt against Massachusetts.
PSN’s Zachary Weiss spoke with Burt after practice as he dove into the current state of his team, how much of an impact his seniors have had, how his current team compares to the 2015-16 NCAA Tournament team and other topics.
Well deserved! Best and most valuable player in A-10.
