Pitt Basketball Misses NCAA Tournament, Virginia Makes Field

Published

on

Pitt has officially missed the field for the 2023-24 NCAA Tournament despite a strong 22-11 record and a No. 40 NET ranking.

The Panthers missed the dance one year after making the First Four and beating Mississippi State in Dayton, Ohio. Pitt finished this season with three-straight wins in the regular season, following that run up with a win over No. 5 Wake Forest in the quarterfinals of the ACC Tournament. Pitt then fell to North Carolina, the conference’s top seed, in the semifinals. NC State went on to win the tournament.

The Panthers went 12-8 in conference play throughout the regular season, finishing in fourth place in the conference. Pitt’s non-conference strength of schedule ranked in the 340s nationally, and was commonly referenced throughout the bracketology prediction process as a knock on Pitt’s resume. The Panthers’ worst loss of the season was against Missouri at home, and their best wins came at Virginia and Duke (two teams in the field).

Fellow bubble teams Florida Atlantic (8 seed), Texas A&M (9 seed), TCU (9 seed), and Virginia (No. 11) all made the tournament field, while Pitt was left out.

The Panthers defeated Virginia on the road, had more Quad 1 wins, and had a higher NET ranking than the Cavaliers. However, Virginia did not lose any Quad 3 games, and Pitt lost two.

It’s Sunday @6:45 pm. How about you cut down the amount of sodas you’ve had. Relax, it’s TV entertainment for most of us. Well all be at work tomorrow morning and our days will go on whether Pitt or Duquesne made it or not.

Nice and mature post. The reality is, VA should not have been chosen over Pitt. Whether they deserve to be in based on the season’s totality compared to other schools is another argument. Grow up.

Ooh. One big difference- Dambrot won a title. 6 years in and Capel has nothing. And as for the “Penn State” nonsense I have two Pitt degrees. I’m guessing that’s two more than you big mouth.

Yeah your “guess” is about as accurate as your game predictions this season. Anyway, best of luck to your Nittany Lions in the CB3 or wherever they’re headed next.

It’s 7. As opposed to one trip to Dayton in 6. More felons recruited than bids. Worse overall record. Worse conference record One sub .500 season vs 4

Sorry 7. I guess I don’t care. Enjoy the tournament. It’s a once in a life time opportunity for you. Make the best of it.

Everybody, please be nice to my friend, Rob Radich. He and I go way back. When we have our heart to hearts, he always laments about being so fat and ugly. He is also very insecure about the fact that he has no athletic ability whatsoever. So please don’t be mean to him. He asked me to send this message, as we are such great friends, and he is embarrassed by who he is.

You are welcome Rob.

Chill out Bro, this doesn’t diminish the fact PITT finished 4th in the ACC. I believe according to your pea sized brain YOU had PITT finishing somewhere near the bottom 😜
We ALL know PITT is one of the Top 35 teams in the Country and there’s alot of politics with the Selection Committee. It’s a shame the Top 64 Teams don’t get automatic bids 😕
Why not have the Top 64 get automatic bids and have those Cinderella teams who luck up and won their Conference Tourneys have play in games🤔 Anyway H2P💪

I congratulate Keith Dam rot for the fantastic job that he did in resurrecting the Duquesne program. He deserves to enjoy his retirement. I’m the first person to come to your troubled little troll mind,HaHaHaHaHa. So WHO is the pathetic loser, Clarabell???

Heather, let the team decide if they want to extend the season. Then call SEC Commissioner Sankey to express support for a P4 tournament.

It would’ve done Pitts tournament resume some good had they played ( and beaten) Duquesne. What will it take for Pitt to schedule Duquesne every year?

I’m disappointed too but really? Team lost to Missouri, Miami, Syracuse twice. If they’d won just one of those games they’d be in the tournament.

Almost feel sorry for the haters out there…you know, the ones that would rather see the team lose so they can say “I told you so” instead of rooting for their “favorite” team to actually win. To bad, they missed out on a hell of an exciting season.

A couple of thoughts:

1) Remember when baseball was left out of the tournament a few years ago because the douchebag AD from Stetson thought that Alabama deserved it more because they played in the SEC? This feels the same.

2) What will it take for Pitt to improve their overall athletic reputation? They win a title in football, and get nothing. (Although, that’s on Pat for blowing it with his OC.). But it seems no matter how much they win in any sport, they are the Rodney Dangerfield of the nation.

Hard to believe Pitt did not get in but Mississippi State did. They were 8-10 and finished 9th in their conference and lost 5 of their last 7!!! Now that is quite a resume!!!

Cheers on the Bluff today.
They are bummed up the street in Oakland not making the tournament. I was really rooting for them and think they deserved a spot over teams like Michigan State and Virginia.

Skipping the NIT? That’s a head-scratcher.

The team could’ve gotten more practice and game time. If some players didn’t want to play, they could’ve just sat out, like in bowl games. And why not have an assistant coach step up if Capel’s busy with the transfer portal? Missed opportunities all around.

I am boycotting the NCAA tournament because of the committee’s bias against the PITT program. I will not watch any of the games.
