Nelly Cummings Chooses Pitt, Tells Why: ‘I Want to Put Pitt Basketball Back on the Map’

On Friday, Pittsburgh native Nelly Cummings committed to Pitt as a grad transfer, choosing to come home for his last year of college hoops.

“I really value my family, and I really wanted them to be a part of this next step I take,” Cummings told Pittsburgh Sports Now after his commitment. “Being that Pitt is home, it was hard for me not to be really excited about the pitch.”

The former Lincoln Park star made the decision to come home to play for Jeff Capel after visiting Pitt’s campus last week and spending a day with Capel on an in-home visit.

“I’ve built a really strong relationship with Coach,” he said. “He came to my house the other day, and we really got a chance to kick it and talk about basketball and talk about things that are important to us. I think me and him are going to have a really good connection going forward for sure.”

In his college career, Cummings has scored over 1,100 points and has averaged more than ten points per game in each of his last three seasons, which all came at Colgate. A career 36% three-point shooter, Cummings has made 149 threes in his college career. He brings veteran leadership, pure point guard play, and lots of scoring and shooting ability to Pitt.

“I really have big goals man,” Cummings said about his goals for his Pitt career. “I want to come out here and win the ACC. I want to bring Pitt back to the tournament. I want to put Pitt basketball back on the map. And that’s my plan.”

Nelly’s brother Brandin, a current prospect in the class of 2024 in Pittsburgh, picked up an offer from Pitt just days ago. Now, as Nelly is officially a Panther, his focus shifts to another task: recruiting his younger brother.

“We think very highly of Pitt,” he said. “We are really excited about the opportunity we have in front of us, and now, I am going to recruit my brother now. I am definitely all in! We are definitely just excited for the situation and ready to make the best of it.”

It will be nice to have a point guard for next season. They now have to find shooters and someone that can play the 4 spot.

Cummings will be the first Pitt Hooper from Beaver County since Blackhawks’s Sean Miller and Freedom’s Steve Maslek played the late 1980’s. H2P!
