Middle linebacker is a position that Pitt has been trying to recruit for the last couple of seasons.

To this point, the Panther coaches haven’t been able to get a commitment from anyone but they’re already recruiting the position for their Class of 2019.

Today, defensive coordinator Josh Conklin was in Eastern Pennsylvania and extended an offer to a hard-hitting player from Malvern Prep.

Keith Maguire Jr. (6-foot-2, 215-pounds) is a first-team Pennsylvania linebacker and also an accomplished receiver–as you’ll soon see.

At this point, Maguire holds early offers from Baylor, Duke, North Carolina, Vanderbilt, Virginia and West Virginia.

After taking a call from Conklin, Maguire was able to add Pitt to that list of scholarships.

“Before today, I haven’t talked to Pitt all that much, maybe a message on Twitter and some mail here and there. I was kind of shocked when it happened today,” said Maguire.

“He said they liked the way I play, which is physical and fast. I got a sense for where the ball is.”

I asked Maguire why he believes he’ll be a good Division I player.

”Probably my work ethic. I’m always hustling around and try to be in the play. Being around the ball will allow you to make plays. To me when I’m around the play, I can make things happen. My strengths are my hustle and work ethic both on and off [the field].”

“I’m starting to get excited about the overall recruiting process but at the same time trying to take things slow. We can start taking official visits earlier now so I’ll probably take a few this spring.”

Finally, I asked Maguire what if anything he knows about the Panther program.

“I follow Pitt a good amount. I’m definitely anxious to get down there and check things out and see what the campus is like. I’ve never been down there but have heard from people that have been there that things are nice.

As far as the football team, I think they’re on the right track and the coaches are doing a good job.”

Not only is Maguire a very skilled linebacker, he can also play wide receiver. Earlier this year, he made a catch that was ranked #2 on SportsCenter’s Top 10 Plays.
