This was a big weekend for future Pitt guard Trey McGowens and his family as they made their first visit to Pittsburgh.

Amazingly, Jeff Capel got this elite prospect to sign with Pitt without him ever making an official visit to the university.

Following the McGowens’ family visit, Pittsburgh Sports Now spoke to Trey’s father, Bobby, who couldn’t have been more impressed by the things he saw and heard.

“The first adjective that I would use to describe this weekend would be impressive. It was an impressive campus and an impressive city,” said Bobby McGowens. “It was great to be able to sit down and talk with all the people associated with the university from the life skills program to the academic support center, to the coaches and to tour the campus it was just impressive.”

“Going into this visit, my family already felt the love and support from the basketball staff and the Pitt basketball community. It was great when we got here to just reaffirm the love from the coaches and to see the passion from people we met at the school for Pitt basketball and how excited they are for the future and to re-establish Pitt basketball as a consistent winner.”

One of if not the most important conversation Mr. McGowens had this weekend was with Capel, the person who will be guiding his son over the next few years.

“First and foremost, just sitting with him this weekend, it was great to be able to sit down and talk about the direction of Pitt basketball and also how my son fits into that plan. It was reassuring to hear him talk passionately about restoring the pride of Pitt basketball and that everyone that supports Pitt basketball would be able to be proud again,” said McGowens. “He also talked about how every player and coach associated with the program would be all in, that they’d play hard, tough and caring for each other.”

In a short amount of time, Capel has built up a tremendous reputation in Pittsburgh and excitement for men’s basketball. I asked McGowens his impression of Capel the person.

“I left with the impression that Coach Capel is someone with high character, he’s going to do it the right way and won’t compromise his integrity just to win basketball games. He’s not only going to try and win basketball games but will make sure that the student athletes that are under his leadership will grow up to be great men. He will hold his players to do the right thing everyday and not just sometimes.”
