2020 4-Star Forward John Hugley Commits to Pitt

It’s a big day for Jeff Capel and Pitt as they address an area that’s been a weakness over the past few years.

The Panthers received a commitment this afternoon from 2020 4-star forward John Hugley from Brush High School in Cleveland, Ohio. Hugley is rated by both recruiting services as a 4-star recruit and one of the Top 15 centers in the country. Also, Rivals ranks Hugley as the 95th best recruit in the Class of 2020.

When it came to decision time, Hugley had offers from over 25 programs including Cincinnati, Florida, Miami, Florida State, UConn, Iowa, Georgia Tech, Missouri, Nebraska, Penn State, Xavier, Dayton, Duquesne, Kansas State, NC State and Pitt. In the end, the decision came down to Pitt and NC State.

I’m told that the relationship he formed with Jason Capel and the opportunity to make an instant impact on the court were big reasons for Hugley’s reasons for selecting Pitt.

Hugley (6’9″, 240) brings something that Pitt is lacking and that’s a presence in the middle. He’s an excellent rebounder, defender and offensive player with his back to the basket. In the last year, he’s really improved his mid-range game and ability to distribute the basketball. Although he has the ability to play either the 4 or 5 position and will likely play both, I’m told that he’ll get most of his minutes at center.

Looking ahead to next years roster, Capel will finally have some size and versatility to his roster with Hugley, Max Amadasun (6’10”, 230), Karim Coulibaly (6’8″, 230) and Noah Collier (6’7″, 210).

Hugley is commitment #3 for Pitt’s Class of 2020 with Capel wanting to add two more players. All eyes now will be on New York 4-star point guard R.J. Davis.

He’s got the hustle and the muscle.
