PITTSBURGH — The score was 2-1 in favor of Jake Wentzel entering the third period.
Wentzel had over a minute of riding time following a takedown and rideout in the second, however David McFadden received a point for a headgear pull in the first, a technical violation.

Out of respect to Wentzel’s riding ability, McFadden chose neutral in the second. It was Wentzel’s choice in the third.
Head coach Keith Gavin initially told him to go down, then allowed him to make his own choice. Wentzel thought he could ride him out and took top.
It paid off in a grand way.
After already qualifying for his first NCAA tournament, Wentzel capped off his big day by taking out the three-time All American, 3-1. Wentzel (18-6) beat two top-10 wrestlers on Sunday in McFadden and Kennedy Monday in his first match.
