PSAC Suspends Competition for Rest of 2020; Hopes to Move Fall Sports to Spring

The Division-II Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference has suspended competition for the remainder of the 2020 calendar year, impacting all fall sports as well as the beginning of winter sports for the 2020-21 season, the league announced on Wednesday.

Local PSAC members include Cal U, Clarion, Edinboro, Gannon, IUP, Mercyhurst, Pitt-Johnstown, Seton Hill and Slippery Rock. Most of the public PSAC schools are members of the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education.

The conference will attempt to move fall sports to spring commissioner Steve Murray said a press release announcing the change.

“The entire conference has worked hard these last few months to prepare for the return of sports to our campuses beginning this fall,” Murray said. “However, it has become apparent that the safe conduct of sports under the guidelines of social distancing is untenable for our members. We cannot place our student-athletes at greater risk than the general student body. Despite our planning and collective efforts, it has become clear that we are not able to do so.”

Teams can continue individual skill instruction and strength and conditioning work through the shutdown, while the conference evaluates its options for a spring season.
