Pitt will certainly be dipping into the transfer portal now that a potential contributor is leaving.
Myles Alston — a third-year sophomore from Virginia Beach, Virginia — officially entered the transfer portal Tuesday morning, announcing his decision via Twitter.
It’s a bit of a surprise considering Alston’s growth this spring, earning some praise from the coaching staff.
“I’m just coming in and working hard every day, controlling what I can control, making sure I’m doing everything right and let the rest take care of itself,” Alston said last month. “There’s great competition in the room, and I look forward to continuing to keep competing with these guys to win a spot.”
Alston appeared in seven games last season, not recording any stats as a reserve wide receiver and special teamer. He redshirted during the 2021 season, not seeing the field after enrolling early.
Alston hasn’t been able to play much over the last few years, considering he wasn’t able to play his senior season at Ocean Lakes High due to COVID-19.
But he was still expected to be the No. 4 wide receiver in Pitt’s offense this coming season, bridging the gap between Pitt’s starting wideouts and the young, inexperienced options.
Pitt was already expected to dip into the transfer portal to address wide receiver depth, and the coaching staff will certainly be active in supplementing the room.
Pitt has 10 wide receivers on scholarship as it stands, with Kenny Johnson and Zion Fowler arriving this summer, and there are four open scholarships.
I said from day 1 that Alston should be on defense. Not a pure slot/wo but a pure safety. His HS film speaks to this. Writing was on the wall from the start. Still can have a good career somewhere.
