Pitt Freshman Papa Kante To Miss The 2023-24 Season

A major blow to the Pitt Panthers basketball program for the upcoming season.

Pitt announced on Thursday afternoon that freshman Papa Amadou Kante is expected to miss the 2023-24 season after suffering a non-contact knee injury during a workout Wednesday evening.

This is the second loss for Jeff Capel’s 2023-24 team as last week it was announced that freshman guard Dior Johnson was no longer a member of the program.

Kante was a late 4-star addition to Pitt’s Class of 2023 and was expected to have a big impact this season with rebounding along with his defensive presence.

“Papa is a terrific person with a great spirit and a relentless work ethic, said HC Jeff Capel. “We feel for him to have this happen so early in his collegiate career. We have an outstanding medical and athletic training staff, and we know that Papa will attack the rehab and recovery process. This will be a minor setback for a young man with a great future in our program.”

Pitt will need to replace his minutes and will rely on the frontcourt of 2023 Second Team All-ACC selection Blake Hinson, center Federiko Federiko, Guillermo Diaz-Graham, Jorge Diaz-Graham, William Jeffress and High Point transfer Zack Austin, who will provide an inside-outside threat.

Tough break for the kid. Unfortunate. I’m waiting to see how this gets spun by Capel when they inevitably regress back to the bottom

if Pitt is going to all his rehab (and I’m sure that is how it works), then these kids should be forced to sign a paper….saying they won’t get up & transfer. After Pitt foots all the bill$. Plus of course he’s on a free ride academically, dorm & meals.
