Poll: Is the Backyard Brawl the Best College Football Rivalry?

Published

on

Pitt. Backyard Brawl

The Backyard Brawl featuring Pitt and West Virginia, is one of the best college football rivalries, featuring two fan bases that absolutely despise each other.

The rivalry will take place once again this Saturday in Morgantown, W.V. for the first time since 2011, the last time the two programs faced off in the Big East. With the Backyard Brawl coming back last season for the first time, Pitt and West Virginia battled in a classic, that Pitt would end up winning, thanks to a pick-six late in the game from defensive back M.J. Devonshire.

The crowd for the Backyard Brawl in 2022 set a record for the most attended game in Pittsburgh sports history, with 70,662 fans showing up.

The Mountaineers fans will be ready Saturday night at 7:30 p.m. to bring everything they have for the rivalry game in front on a national audience on ABC. The Panthers will surely hear it from the home fan base the before, during and potentially even after the game.

This is exactly what a rivalry is supposed to be, with fans of both teams showing disdain for the other any chance they get and relishing every victory that comes their way.

In terms of college football, the Backyard Brawl definitely is one of the best there is, but is it the top rivalry?

There surely are some other great matchups, including Michigan-Ohio State, Notre Dame-USC, Oklahoma-Texas as teams that are generally at the top of the college football world and fighting against their rival for huge opportunities in the postseason. Maybe some of the more legacy based matchups like Army-Navy or Harvard-Yale, or even in-state rivalries like Oregon-Oregon State, Alabama-Auburn, Florida State-Miami and BYU-Utah among others could feature at the top.

There are so many great college football rivalries. Which one is the best of them all?

Sadly, not anymore! Thanks to greed and a generation of players who are glued to their silly devices. No loyalty and sissy like behaviors have ruined college football. I’m glad I’m old enough to have witnessed young MEN play the game opposed to these transfer potty portal brats.

Regarding rivalries that matter in the national ranking, I think Michigan against Ohio State would be first. WVU-PITT is pure hatred. I saw Neal Brown’s hypocritical holier-than-thou remarks in the Trib. There is no fan base that is more crude or violent than WVU.
