Previewing the Pittsburgh City League Championship Game

The Pittsburgh City League Championship Game is set to kick off at 3pm on Saturday, October 28, and now we know which teams will face off in the contest.

The City League has some extremely fierce rivalries, and we’ve seen some stunning upsets take place because of it in recent years. This year, though, it was business as usual in the opening round of the playoffs.

The No. 1 seed Westinghouse Bulldogs (8-0) blew past No. 4 Allderdice 42-8, while No. 2 University Prep (7-2) took down Perry 32-8

The Bulldogs prevailed 34-18 against University Prep when the two teams first met in mid September. Westinghouse is the only City League offense to score against University Prep this season, as Perry’s touchdown in the semifinals came via a pick-six.

Seeing how the Wildcats’ talented defense, led by tackling machine and Division 1 prospect Xair Stevenson, matches up against the Bulldogs’ playmakers could prove the difference in the rematch.

University Prep turned to No. 2 quarterback Jaquille McIntosh in the semifinal game after senior starter Max Qureshi suffered a concussion the previous week. While the Wildcats were still able to roll past Perry with McIntosh, Westinghouse provides a much steeper challenge if Qureshi isn’t able to suit up. The Bulldogs have lost just one game in the past two seasons, and that was in the state championship game.

Even after losing a talented core of seniors last season, the Bulldogs continue to demonstrate talent and poise under the guidance of head coach Donta Green: they’ve beaten all but one of their opponents by at least two scores.

Westinghouse will serve as the home team in this matchup, which will take place at George K. Cupples Stadium on the South Side.
