A pair of Pittsburgh City League football teams made their State Playoff debuts this weekend, with the Westinghouse Bulldogs claiming a 2A subregional title for the third consecutive year.
Westinghouse breezed past the Berlin Brothersvalley Mountaineers 37-20 in a rematch of last year’s subregional title game. It wasn’t anywhere near as close as the final score suggests. The Bulldogs led 37-6 after three quarters before the Mountaineers saved a bit of face with two fourth quarter touchdowns.
Westinghouse Bulldogs’ quarterback Khalil Green accounted for four total touchdowns, two in the air and two with his legs.
The Bulldogs’ win sets up another rematch from last season, as they’ll head up north to take on the Central Clarion Wildcats at Clarion University at 7pm on Friday, November 17. Westinghouse won last year’s matchup at home, 44-8, but may face a tougher task this year. Central Clarion is the highest scoring team in the state, outpacing their opponents by more than 50 points per game this season; Westinghouse’s margin of victory, by comparison, is 20 points per game.
Elsewhere in the East End, the University Prep Wildcats fell to the Meadville Bulldogs 22-18 in another playoff rematch, this one of last year’s 4A subregional game. University Prep led 18-14 more than halfway through the fourth quarter, but the Bulldogs scored a late touchdown to take the lead. Meadville pulled in two late interceptions to thwart any Wildcats attempt at a comeback.
