New Years Day’s Best ESPN BET Bets: Citrus Bowl, Rose Bowl, Sugar Bowl

Published

on

We had a nice New Year’s Eve rebound yesterday with the winning picks, going 2-0-1. The over was easily able to cover in Steelers/Seahawks and the under flew way under in Islanders/Penguins. Our over in Packers/Vikings pushed at 43. If you were fortunate to get this later in the day, you would have gotten it at 42.5, which would’ve been a winner. We move to 78-56-3 on the season.

With a New Year comes New Years Resolution. My Resolution involves college basketball, mainly with the amount of games you can bet. We will be picking more and more games for college basketball with the number of football games left getting smaller and smaller after this coming weekend. Picking the best games can be a challenge, but the winning picks are up for it.

As for today, we have a full slate of college football today and that will be our focus today. As terms of leans that I like, I believe both LSU and Oregon can cover in their respective games. Despite LSU starting a backup quarterback, I do not know the motivation level of Wisconsin, who limped over the final stretch run of the season.

As for the Ducks, this game could get ugly early. Liberty is a very good team, but even with some opt outs for Oregon, they do not have a shot in this game. I would also hit the over and an alternate spread on Oregon up to -24, they are currently listed at -18. Go crazy on New Years!

Now onto the winning picks!

Iowa Hawkeyes vs Tennessee Volunteers (-5.5) O/U 36.5 Citrus Bowl 1:00 PM on ABC

The Citrus Bowl has a new sponsor: Cheez It. I can remember when Capital One was the sponsor for this game. We used to be a proper country and we will not get the proper matchup between these teams as Tennessee’s offense has been completely reworked for this game.

That includes starting QB Joe Milton as well as their top leading rusher and some of their top receivers. Also, some of their elite defensive players have chosen not to play in this game. And this all plays well to the Iowa Hawkeyes.

This game is going to get mucked up, and that totally favors the Hawkeyes. I believe without these explosive players on offense, Tennessee will fall into the tight grip of Iowa. The official pick for this game is for Iowa to cover the spread, but I believe they can win outright as well.

Iowa Covers +5.5, Iowa Hawkeyes 20 Tennessee Volunteers 13

Alabama Crimson Tide vs Michigan Wolverines (-1.5) O/U 45.5 College Football Playoff Semifinals Rose Bowl 5:00 PM on ESPN

Michigan was a little mad that they were picked to face the Crimson Tide. For a team that has lost their last 6 bow games, the Wolverines expected to play a cakewalk game vs Florida St. That didn’t happen obviously, but I believe this Michigan team is a team of destiny.

No matter what you think of John Harbaugh or the Michigan program, you can’t deny that this is their best shot at winning the National Championship. But standing in their way is the same old bully on the block: Alabama. Jalen Milroe has silenced the doubters and has played above average this year. The Crimson Tide defense is as good as always.

If Michigan can control the line of scrimmage and grind this Bama front on defense and offense, the Wolverines should win. This game will come down to the trenches, I think Michigan will have the slight edge and will cover.

Michigan Covers -1.5, Alabama Crimson Tide 27 Michigan Wolverines 30

Washington Huskies vs Texas Longhorns (-4.5) O/U 62.5 College Football Semifinals Sugar Bowl 8:45 PM on ESPN

We close out the semifinals with a rematch of last year’s Alamo Bowl. Washington was able to win that game by 7 thanks to a strong performance by Michael Penix. Can the Huskies have similar success as last year?

Twelve year old me is loving the fact that Texas finally made the playoffs. I became a big Texas Longhorns fan at the peak of their powers in the mid-2000’s. I really wanted to go to Texas for school at that time but my interest waned over the years. And my 12 year old self would hate how I am going to bet this game.

I believe Washington has the same vibes of the TCU squad from last year. No one is giving the Huskies any chance to win this game. Everyone thinks Texas will roll them. I believe Washington has enough firepower to at the very least cover this spread. At worst they lose to Texas on a field goal, but don’t be surprised if the Huskies win this game outright.

Washington Covers +4.5, Washing Huskies 35 Texas Longhorns 38
