Pitt Baseball Moves To 6-1 With Extra Inning Win

The late innings dramatics continued for the 2024 Pitt Panthers baseball team.

This afternoon in their series finale against Texas A&M Corpus Christi, the Panthers needed extra innings to pull out a 6-5 win, which upped their 2024 record to 6-1.

Prior to winning it in the 10th inning, Phil Fox and Pitt got out of a bases loaded, no out jam in the bottom of the 9th to send the game to extras.

The Pitt got on the scoreboard first today in a big way as Justin Fogel crushed a first inning grand slam to give the Panthers a 4-0 lead. This was the first career grand slam for Fogel.

In the top of the 10th, Pitt plated 3 runs to put the game away. Fogel led off the inning with a walk which was followed by a perfectly executed hit and run single by Tyler Bischke. With runners and first and third and 0 outs, Josh Spiegel laced a single to right, which put Pitt back on top 7-6.

Pitt increased the lead to 8-6 when Jake Kendro came through with an RBI single, that was the first 3-hit game of his college career. The 9th run was scored on a wild pitch.

After watching him get out of the jam in the bottom of the 9th inning, Pitt manager Mike Bell stuck with Fox in the 10th and he came through, striking out two batters.

Panther Game Notes:
-Catcher Josh Spiegel drove in 3 runs.
-Shortstop Jake Kendo went 3-4 with an RBI.
-Second baseman Tyler Bischke went 2-4 with 2 runs scored and a walk.
-RP Phil Fox pitched two scoreless innings.
-Freshman Aidan Coleman made the first start of his college career and went 5 innings, allowing 3 runs and struck out 3 batters.
-Relief pitcher Matthew Fernandez pitched 2.2 innings, allowing only 1 run on two hits.

Pitt will return to the field on Wednesday for their 2024 Home Opener against Youngstown State. First pitch from Charles L. Cost Field will be at 3 PM.
