A down night for the Winning Picks Friday, finishing 1-2. Our only win of the night was the over in Rockets/Trail Blazers. The Red Wings were shutout by the Coyotes in Tempe. Boise St shocked San Diego St in a high scoring affair that killed the under. We moved to 190-143-3 on the year.
Today we have an action-packed day of college basketball with final games of the regular season and conference tournament matchups. There are some big-time games today including North Carolina/Duke that has seemed to lose a little bit of its zip without Hall of Fame coaches on the sideline. I don’t really have a side in this game, but I like the over to cover.
Heading down to the SEC, a ranked South Carolina is a 5.5-point underdog at unranked Mississippi St today. The Bulldogs are one of the many teams ahead of Pitt for a tournament spot. I believe the Gamecocks will help the Panthers out a lot and win outright as underdogs in Starkville.
In conference tournament action, we’re heading off to a high noon showdown in the NEC of all places. Le Moyne, a newcomer to D1, has made me a bit of money this year when I’ve bet them. They lost to Merrimack twice already this year, but I believe they will keep it close and cover as 7.5-point underdogs. In the CAA, I like Stony Brook to cover against Northeastern as short favorites in the 2nd round of their conference tournament.
Now onto the Winning Picks!
George Washington Revolutionaries at Duquesne Dukes (-11.5) O/U 145.5 2:00 PM on SportsNet Pittsburgh/ESPN+
I had totally forgotten that George Washington changed their name from the Colonials to the Revolutionaries. The name change hasn’t really helped their play on the court, as they remain in the bottom of the A-10 standings. The Dukes have a great chance to lock in the #6 seed in the tournament today.
Duquesne has been one of the best under teams in college basketball this season at home. The total has gone under in 14 of the Dukes’ 17 games at home, that’s an 82% win clip. This total is pretty high today due to the fact that teams score at will against GW. I think Duquesne will have their way with the team formerly known as the Colonials, but they will keep the score low on defense and the under will cover.
Under 145.5 Covers, George Washington Revolutionaries 60 Duquesne Dukes 80
Pittsburgh Penguins at Boston Bruins (-195) O/U 5.5 3:00 PM on ABC/Disney
It’s a sad day, it’s a bad day to be a Penguins fan. After being sellers at the deadline for the first time in nearly two decades and a blowout loss Thursday to the Capitals, confidence in the team is at a low. Playoffs are out of the question. It is fitting that this game will be in cartoon form on Disney given the state of the Pens.
Pittsburgh normally gives Boston a competitive game, but I don’t expect that this afternoon after their lackluster performances this week against Edmonton and previously mentioned Washington. I do like the over in this game and for good reason. The Penguins have given up at least 3 goals in 6 of their last 7 games. I expect more of the same today, as the Bruins blow out the Penguins in Boston. All the goals should be cool to see in a cartoon.
Over 5.5 Covers, Pittsburgh Penguins 2 Boston Bruins 5
NC State Wolfpack at Pittsburgh Panthers (-7.5) O/U O/U 144.5 7:45 PM on the CW/22 the Point
No team in college basketball is surging in my opinion like Pitt. Beginning with their win on the road at Duke, the Panthers are 10-3 over this current stretch run. One of those wins was in Raleigh against the Wolfpack, who have completely fallen off the bubble and could be on the verge of being not invited to the NIT.
Pitt was an underdog when these two teams faced last month, and they won outright as an underdog. Now NC State is a big underdog, but they don’t have the same fight at this point in the season like the Panthers do. I like Pitt to win by double digits today and get the cover against the Wolfpack.
