Pitt DC Randy Bates Out to Replace Six Starters This Spring

PITTSBURGH — Pitt lost six starters on defense following the end of the 2018 season, but the Panthers and second-year defensive coordinator Randy Bates are confident that Pitt’s defense can be a strength of the team.

Part of the reason for that is the depth thy feel they’ve developed over the last few years.

Every place that Pitt lost a player, they seem to have at least one capable of stepping up in a greater role, whether it’s Keyshon Camp filling in at defensive tackle, Patrick Jones II at end, Phil Campbell, Cam Bright, Chase Pine and Elias Reynolds at linebacker, Jason Pinnock and Damarri Mathis at corner or Therran Coleman, Paris Ford, Bricen Garner and Jazzee Stocker at safety, Pitt’s fill-ins are an experienced group.

That has Bates and company feeling good about their unit as Pitt gets spring practices underway.
