Despite Only 1 Year of HS Football, DE Robert Jackson Earns Offer from Pitt
Getting an offer from a Power Five program after playing just one year of football isn’t the norm but it’s happened to a special athlete from eastern Pennsylvania.
2021 defensive end Robert Jackson from Archbishop Wood School in Warminster, Pennsylvania got the news from Cory Sanders on Tuesday that he’d earned a scholarship offer from Pitt.
“Coach Sanders called me and we’ve actually been talking since February,” Jackson tells Pittsburgh Sports Now. “They’ve been texting me finding out how I’m doing, what I’ve been up to and other things to learn more about me. Yesterday afternoon, he called me and told me how the defensive line coach really likes me and that they were extending an offer to me.”
“They told me how they liked me size (6’6″, 250) and the potential that I have since it was my first year playing football and things that I’ll be able to do once I fully develop. I think Pitt is a really good football school and that’s where Aaron Donald came from. Plus, I’ve done my research on their academics and they’re just a really good overall school. Hopefully when all this [coronavirus] dies down, I can come out and make a visit to see the campus.”

2019 was the first time that Jackson played organized football and to be earning this type of attention is impressive. It’s obviously a life changing decision that Jackson and his family made now that he’ll be able to attend college for free.
“Originally I just played basketball,” said Jackson. “Coming into high school, I was a solidly built kid with broad shoulders. The football coach at my high school had been trying to get me to play football since my freshman year. The same thing happened with another coach for us during my sophomore year and he told me about what a good football team we had.”
“My parents never wanted me to play but before my junior year they said if I wanted to that I could play. I decided to go out and practice with the team for a little bit , I really liked it and we went on to win the state championship. All of this college attention I’m receiving is very motivating to me because during my freshman and sophomore years, I wasn’t receiving any interest from schools to play basketball. With all of these offers, I’m just being humble, patient and I’m appreciate of these opportunities.”

Jackson tells PSN that aside from Pitt, he also has been offered by Syracuse, Bowling Green, Central Michigan, Arizona State, Toledo, Rutgers, UMass, Boston College, Temple and Indiana.
