The Horizon League is expected to delay the start of its fall sports season due to the continuing COVID-19 pandemic, the league announced Thursday, confirming a Pittsburgh Sports Now report.
The move is expected to impact both exhibition and non-conference contests at this time, with a new start date for the fall season of October 1.
The league, which Robert Morris officially joined on July 1, sponsors cross country, men’s and women’s soccer and volleyball as fall sports. The Horizon League does not sponsor football. Robert Morris will play 2020 as an independent in football before joining the Big South in 2021.
The league’s decision comes on the heels of major conferences either cancelling non-conference play for fall sports altogether or similarly pushing back their start.
Robert Morris’ first scheduled contest was to be an Aug. 15 women’s soccer exhibition against Pitt. That has already been postponed due to the ACC moving the start of its fall sports back to Sept. 1.
