The transfer portal is filling up with players from all over the country, and on Wednesday, one of the most highly-touted prospects in the 2022 class entered.
According to Jason Jordan, MJ Rice, a former five-star prospect who spent his freshman season at Kansas, will enter the portal. Rice, a McDonalds All-American last year, played in 23 games this year for the Jayhawks, averaging 7.5 minutes, 2.2 points, and one rebound per appearance. Rice stands at 6-foot-5, 215 pounds, and was a top-40 player in the final 2022 rankings, per 247 Sports.
Rice took official visits to Kansas Oklahoma State, and Pitt, before choosing the Jayhawks. During his recruitment, other schools mentioned in the process included Duke, Virginia Tech, and NC State. The G-League was also reportedly an option for Rice.
There are over 1,000 players currently in the transfer portal, and the Panthers have been targeting players from around the nation over the past few weeks since the portal opened on March 13. The Panthers hosted High Point transfer Zack Austin for a zoom meeting with the staff on Tuesday, and have also spoken with a number of other prospects.
