Dave Borbely Not Returning as Pitt Offensive Line Coach

Published

Pitt offensive line coach Dave Borbely.

Pat Narduzzi has made another change to the offensive coaching staff.

Dave Borbely will not return as the Pitt offensive line coach next season, ending his seven seasons in charge of the offensive linemen in Pittsburgh. The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette first reported the news.

He’s the second Pitt offensive staffer to be let go Friday, following tight ends coach Tim Salem’s dismissal earlier in the day. And he will not be the last staffer to be dismissed today either.

Borbely, 64, has been a big part of landing several key offensive linemen during his tenure in Pittsburgh, including Ryan Baer and Caleb Holmes in recent classes, but the offensive line has slipped over the last two seasons.

Narduzzi was forced to part ways with former offensive coordinator Frank Cignetti Jr. in November, following the complete offensive breakdown in 2023, and it’s trickling down to the offensive staff. Western Carolina offensive coordinator Kade Bell was hired as his replacement, and already in his brief tenure at the helm of the offense, it’s certainly been a breath of fresh air.

Borbely has also coached at Maryland, Virginia, Louisville, Colorado, Notre Dame, Stanford, Tulane, Temple, Rice and Tennessee during his coaching career, which dates back to the early 1980s.

I hate to see anyone lose their job, but Pitt should be A LOT better off without him. Hopefully our AD will help find a good OL coach with proven success, and not a has been who jumps from job to job.

Borberly well seemingly well liked, the results have not been equal to the recruits that came in.

Borbs had a pretty good run here, as far as number of years. And we had some decent to good offensive lines, especially in 2021. So thanks for that ACC championship run.
Only Clemson, FSU & Pitt have won ACC championships since the ACC expanded in 2013.

Best wishes to Coach Borbs. Losing has consequences and the OL has not performed the last two years. Hate to see anyone lose their job, and maybe this is more Cignetti fall out, but changes are in order

In game adjustments were non existent, the super senior oline was all but wasted in 22 good riddance as far as I’m concerned. Kade will need a sharper younger coach to match his offensive philosophy.

Nonya, tremendous and accurate statement on game adjustments. Horrible! The AD also made sure Partridge stayed. The new assistant coaches main attributes will be their recruiting ability. Partridge needs some help on defensive unit in recruiting. Actually going to be exciting to see these new coaches. AD might stun with a couple surprises.

Heather is a great AD. Her fingerprints are all over these fire and hires. Hope we can keep her!

Dave Borbely, Andre Powell and Tim Salem were important people in bringing stability and respectability back to a Pitt program that was in desperate need of this prior to their arrival. It appeared that the parents in particular felt confident that their son was in good hands when they left home and was under these men’s care. It is hard to put a value on these attributes in college football especially today. As a Pitt supporter for over 50 years I am thankful for their contributions. With that said, we all knew that after the regression this past season there… Read more »

They can’t do much worse than what they had those coaches reached their ceiling. As you know this is a fast-changing sport if you don’t evolve you get left behind

I agree completely. With the current staff until this overhaul including Cignetti (and other older offensive coordinators that are since gone) we have witnessed what has become the norm. This norm unfortunately is a “yo-yo effect.” When we remember these coaches do we remember the ACC champions or the under performing losses. The answer obviously is both which is unacceptable. From my perspective we still should not minimize the stability and respectability these men brought to Pitt. Considering the revolving door of head coaches, coordinators and position coaches between Wannstedt and Narduzzi we were able to be proud how this… Read more »

In most cases I would assume older than their parents. I don’t think many 17–18 year olds parents are in their late fifties and sixties.

My point is these men and it might be because of age or simply their character or whatever provided a level of respect and stability to the program. They were honest in their dealings with players on the team and recruits and their families. This is a trait I admire in the coaches that represent my institution.
